๐ The WHO recently labelled aspartame as a possible carcinogen, which is obviously concerning for a lot of people - especially those who drink sweetened soft drinks like diet coke. ๐ Does it mean that if you drink a diet coke you're dramatically increasing your risk of developing cancer? ๐ค
Well, there isn't a lot of evidence to support it being a carcinogen currently, however there's enough to suggest that more research is needed. ๐ The Joint FAO/WHO Expert Committee on Food Additives (JECFA) have set a threshold of at 40 mg/kg/day for Aspartame, and advise against exceeding this. โ๏ธ
To put this into perspective, this is around 10 cans of diet soda A DAY to hit that threshold for the average adult, which is really quite a lot. ๐ฅค๐ฅค๐ฅค Taking this forward, even if you were to drink a couple of diet sodas a day you would be well under the recommended limit recommended by WHO themselves. ๐
Now, does this mean you SHOULD consume that many? Ideally not. โ If you can avoid doing that then that's probably better, because we want the majority of our diet to be made up of whole foods which are unprocessed. ๐ฅ๐ However, if you really enjoy a diet soda or it helps you lose weight then go for it! ๐ฅค๐๏ธโโ๏ธ
Based on current recommendations, it's not going to do you any harm, and if you're using them to lose weight - you're doing yourself a lot good. ๐๐ช
