Dhirendra Kumar is the first farmer in Darbhanga, Bihar, who revolutionised Makhana farming by breaking a deep-rooted caste barrier. For generations, the fishermen community was the only one to harvest these seeds by diving underwater to collect them from pond beds—a labor-intensive and exclusive process.
Determined to make Makhana farming more accessible, Dhirendra trained under scientists at ICAR and learned Makhana cultivation in fields. This approach used no more water than rice cultivation and eliminated the need for dangerous underwater harvesting. He proved that Makhana could be grown differently, and inspired hundreds of other farmers as well. As the demand for Makhana grew, he trained many in the region for field cultivation of Makhana, increasing their profits by 10 times.
