Also, beware of maintenance crew. I was in Vegas, and our shower handle broke. Instead of giving us a different room, they had maintenance come fix it. I was ok with that until he started asking questions like "was I alone, when would my roommates be back, how old was I", etc. If my roommates hadn't come back, I was about to call the front desk. It's not a pleasant memory.

Iโm reading all these comments, and OMG this is so scary!! It truly is so sad that we actually have to do things like this for safety especially the money we pay for these rooms it should come with some kind of trust!! I never did anything like this until the world of big brother has become a huge part of our lives!! Checking for camera, bed bugs and the boogie man !! Really takes the fun out of the get get away!!

In addition to checking and sanitzing, I carry a small, refillable, "spray perfume bottle" filled with undiluted lemon juice, vinegar and 2,000,000 scoville pepper extract. Looks like petfume, acts like mace. I have it in my hand, ready for use, while checking the room. It is unfortunate that this is our reality. ๐

I used to travel a lot for business and one day I checked into a hotel and I was very tired. I got to the door of my room, and opened it with the card. AS I was about to enter the room, I heard the shower was on and I could see some clothes on the bed. I backed out immediately. I then noticed that I had gone to the WRONG room/wrong floor.... but my key card opened that other person's door.

I am not a flight attendant but I am a women and sometimes I travel solo on business trips to different countries. I wouldn't get why she checks her room like that untill few years ago someone got into my room while I was away and took my underwear. Only then I realised that someone was in my room every dat when I was at work. Maybe even when I'm was in the room. There were hints of that and my gut feeling. Now I always do this, always ask for a room o higher floor, no connecting doors, never tell anyone that I am alone, dont hang in the hotel bar alone and so on. There a creeps out there who targets solo female travelers. To this day I think it was one of hotel employees.

I was staying in a hotel where the neighbor had been creeping on me. One day late at night I was searching through my bag to find my key in the dark and again my neighbor was creeping around and would not leave me alone. He disappeared and returned moments later, saying the front desk gave him a key to my room. I hate hotels. So now I travel with three HUGE dogs because last I checked, we are in the middle of an unaddressed rape epidemic.
My sister was raped in a Club Med hotel in MEXICO by a staff member. The hotel did nothing to remedy the situation or prevent future guests from harm...and my sister is an attorney.

I flew for virgin Atlantic for 13yrs this brought back memories I had forgotten! I always checked my room as soon as I arrived I used to prop open the door with my suitcase & check everywhere before I shut and locked the door. If there was an interconnecting door Iโd push furniture up against it. Sounds silly now but it was something I did automatically for many years.

20 years in aviation,2 very world class Airlines from next door (to Emirates ๐)five star hotel rooms, my routine exactly the same with one difference, checks done with door left open (trolley against door).. My colleague finding a housekeeping staff behind the curtain whilst getting ready for shower taught me early on to be vigilant..

Girl always! A flight attendant at my airline was murdered on a layover by someone hiding under her bed in the 90s. We still train to security check your room!
