if i am gussing correct its most likely a performance trick. usually unique characters tend to be higher res as they show up in cutscenes. so by swapping the character it could possibly save a little more performance as there is less polygons and high res textures loaded near character in gameplay. as for why they decided to keep a character there at all instead of just a sound asset, is either to save time or they just thought it sounded more realistic.
