While in Europe pile dwellings are slowly coming to the end, new Bronze Age settlements start to arise.
These range from cave shelters, to lowland and highland villages and fortified hillforts.

Lowland villages were supposedly made of farmsteads with timber-framed houses with gabled roofs, and associated buildings, including animal pens. These villages were without obvious defensive structures.

Cattle were the most common livestock, along with pig, sheep and goat. In the late Bronze age, horses have also become part of the farms.

In the mid-2nd millennium bc, the land from the northernmost fringes of the Carpathian Basin, to the Mediterranean, was covered with numerous settlements, with hillforts at their centres, which were home to local elites.

In the northern Adriatic and Istria, a special type of hillfort settlement was built, called Kastelir (Castellieri), with its own specific culture. While in
These hillforts would endure even going into the iron age.

At the end of the 2nd millennium BC, Larger settlements with a fortified centre arose at river crossings, road junctions and other strategic locations. They contained buildings of considerable size and were placed in a grid planning. Some of these became the predecessors of later Iron age and Roman settlements.
