Hundreds of Anganwadi workers (sevikas) and helpers (sahayikas) staged a demonstration outside Bihar’s Vidhan Sabha demanding a hike in their honorariums, among other demands. Soon, the police unleashed water cannons and lathicharged the protestors to disperse them. One Anganwadi worker can be seen fainting in the ongoing protests. The workers who tried to gherao the Assembly, also threatened to intensify their stir if their demands were not met.

The protestors’ major demands include an increase in their monthly honorarium and government employee status for them. They are also demanding an increase in the retirement age of the workers and a lump sum of Rs 5 lakh for Anganwadi sevikas and Rs 3 lakh for sahayikas.
