I think the spanish word "que sera sera" was popular back in the days among english speaker because of the old american song
And muslims have a variant of this where if you don't want to do something, or you believe it won't happen, you say "insyallah" (if god is willing) which is like saying it's not gonna happen because god is not willing

That's pretty accurate re. the typical foreigner reaction & Japanese counterpoint. I would say getting accustomed to and embracing shouganai culture is sometimes helped by also getting used to noble dishonesty culture. E.g. "It's forbidden for unmarried staff to entertain overnight guests, shouganai... ah-- is that my new clerk I see sneaking off at dawn with another girlfriend in a big overcoat and driving her to where her car is parked discreetly a few kilometres away? Erai, na! How noble of him to hide his activities and never admit to them when questioned by his supervisor. As his supervisor, I'm truly honoured by such committment to secrecy and will pretend to remain unaware of how he spends his nights."
