It's totally rational to not worry about what is outside your control

Bucho gives you a mountain of paperwork before you clock out on a Friday evening:

Japanese Salaryman: shouganai

Non Japanese: nah, this can wait till Monday

I think the spanish word "que sera sera" was popular back in the days among english speaker because of the old american song

And muslims have a variant of this where if you don't want to do something, or you believe it won't happen, you say "insyallah" (if god is willing) which is like saying it's not gonna happen because god is not willing

"Aceite que dói menos": essa é uma típica frase daqui do Brasil que significa resignação perante aquilo que não se pode mudar. É um princípio meio parecido com o Shoganai.

That's pretty accurate re. the typical foreigner reaction & Japanese counterpoint. I would say getting accustomed to and embracing shouganai culture is sometimes helped by also getting used to noble dishonesty culture. E.g. "It's forbidden for unmarried staff to entertain overnight guests, shouganai... ah-- is that my new clerk I see sneaking off at dawn with another girlfriend in a big overcoat and driving her to where her car is parked discreetly a few kilometres away? Erai, na! How noble of him to hide his activities and never admit to them when questioned by his supervisor. As his supervisor, I'm truly honoured by such committment to secrecy and will pretend to remain unaware of how he spends his nights."

In the mean time, us westerners waste a lot of time and energy stressing over things that cannot be helped.
