Eye contact is challenging for everyone, but can be extra challenging or even virtually impossible for some of my neurodivergent friends. Take the video with a grain of salt, as it’s perhaps not relevant to you. ❤

If you do struggle with eye contact - get ahead of it 🙂 “I am excited to be here! I struggle with eye contact so don’t think I’m looking away because I’m disinterested, it’s just how I think and perform best. Thank you for understanding!” Short + sweet

Your body language also changes when you avoid eye contact.
Crazy how all these little elements produce such a huge response from whomever is interacting with you.

Eye contact is so hard for me!
Direct, extended eye contact can be great for a pitch or an interview, but how do you find the difference between weak eye contact and staring someone down and making them uncomfortable?

Erin, I'm a neurodivergent and eye contact is out of question to me, I can't even think about without being nervous. How can I warn the interviewer about that?

Great demo!! I remember learning that simply looking at the bridge of the nose between the eyes is a good trick to make it easier.

I love you Erin, I’m an old fart but even I know this missed the mark with neurodivergent folks. I’m partially blind and my eyes are all over the place, but before meeting I let them know, “ I apologise in advance, my eye contact may be inconsistent as I am partially sighted” you got this!

Landed an actual dream job a few weeks ago with help from Pi, who I would've never found without you. It's changing my life every day. Thank you.

What about Neurodivergent people who struggle with eye contact and difficulty answering non specific questions? Or ridiculous questions like "what animal would you be and why?" I was asked this for a job at Target. I just sat silent for a few minutes because my brain was like what? Why? What!?

I'm neurodivergent and eye contact is almost torture to me. But with time, I've discovered that this is a great deal for most people, so now I just look to a point in the person's face that will make them think that I'm looking into their eyes.

I can look into someones eyes. But if they dont, i felt disrespected so i do the same.
Coz for me, not looking means you hate the person you are talking to.

Since I am visually impaired AND I'm also working as a jobcoach i always go with the first optionen but tell my clients to go with the second one.❤

Honestly I'm not an HR, but the strong eye contact strategy makes me think "well this person is quite pushy, confident, maybe even too confident, cocky I would say. We might have conflicts in the future". But the "weak eye contact" makes me think "well this person is shy, but if I help them just a little bit, they'll make a great employee, they'll do their best and they'll do what I tell them".

t's an introversion/extroversion thing. Introverts find it difficult to maintain eye contact when talking, but easier when listening. For an extrovert it's the opposite. That's how you can tell if someone is an extrovert or introvert.

Well, this is a slap in the face for neurodivergent folks

For neurodivergent people specially: you can look at the bridge of the nose and it will still have the same effect. Ask someone to try it with you if you don't believe it!
