As flawed as Robb was, I admired that he didn't let his ego cloud his judgment. Remember he was a TEENAGER here. Book Robb was FOURTEEN at the start of the series. And this is an era where projecting manliness is everything. I like the Starks but this boy could've gone farther if he wasn't in the "honorable fools" family.

Jamie Lannister was so legendary as a swordsman across the realm that backing down from such a challenge was not even considered cowardice, it was common sense. Meanwhile Jon's greatest victories and accolades were almost all beyond the Wall and surrounding it so his legend was still forming when Ramsey rejected the Challenge, which is why it had a more negative impact.
