Keeping track of a state's population and calculating property values is a big job. The office of Censor in Rome was reserved for the most dignified and accomplished politicians, often at the end of their careers. Censors oversaw taxation and made pronouncements about the morality of Rome's citizenry, which was essential to retain divine favor.

The Censors were key public figures throughout the Republican period. As the empire developed under the Julio-Claudian and Flavian dynasties, censorial duties, like so many others, were subsumed into the responsibilities of the emperor. Eventually, the emperor Domitian would eliminate the need for a separate office for censors, and going forward the task of taking the census, overseeing taxation, and dictating public morality would be under the umbrella of imperial duties.
