My friend did the farming thing for 2 or 3 months. Was the hardest work heā€™s ever done in his life but he took the time to reflect on life and he came back with a plan.

Be really really REALLY careful if you're going to do a farm work program, especially if you're traveling abroad. Firstly, it may not even be legal without a special visa. (For example, in the United States, you need a J visa.) Some programs mislead or even lie about visa requirements, so do your own research. Second, make sure you give the address where you're staying to a trusted contact. There are stories of people traveling for these programs being held hostage and forced to work for years. Don't accidentally internationally traffic yourself!

There was a guy on Craigslist, advertising for someone to help out on his land, take care of a few animals etc. But he was killing the guys who came for the job. He only got caught because the last guy got shot but was able to escape.
So be careful with answering ads

I did the farm work on a lot of farms alreaey and based on my experience it has been a really good time. If you look at the farms profile and reviews you know what you can and should expect. I was on 4 farms for several weeks or months each and never worked more than 4-5 hours a week. You get free food and accommodation so it's perfect if you're traveling on a budget. Its also a good way to connect with people no matter if its the host or the other "workers". I can only talk positively about my farm stays since ive learned a lot and got to know so many people I'm still in contact with that feel like family. Overall, I'd recommend it to everyone. Can't go wrong if you read and check the reviews.

If going on the working ā€œvacationā€ be careful that you declare that you have a working visa or you can be denied entry.

Going to time share pitches were how my parents were able to afford most of our vacations when I was a kid. We'd get a discounted place to stay for a few days, they would go to a sales pitch for an hour while I hung out and watched tv. They would decline the offer of buying a time share. Then they'd get free tickets to shows/parks in town

Farm work is HARD. You dont eat until you feed the animals. They dont feed you caviar and llobster. You eat oats. Just like the horses. By the time the work is finished, all you want is to go to bed.

Okay but the last one actually sounds amazing. I love long car trips. My favorite long drive is between Salt Lake and Reno. I didn't know I could so it with someone else's car for free

Ive done workaway and it was an amazing experience! I worked at an animal sanctuary in Hawaii, and while the management and structure were a little lacking, the experiences I had around the island, meeting locals and making friends, was totally worth it! I only spent maybe $300 for the month I lived there, and 90% of that was on personal groceries I wanted on top of the ones provided by the host.
