Also works to sharpen scissors, fold many layers and you get nice clean cutting scissors again

German Carbide Steel can’t be sharped by something as soft as aluminum.
You are mostly just cleaning the blade which is where you are experiencing the difference in cutting since it does get gunked up.

Sometimes pin cushions have needle sharpers on them, like the pepper on the tomato pin cushion. One of those could work as well!

Could you waste less aluminium foil next time, surely you only need a few inches for this!
Even better clean the blade with a reusable scrubber, because you certainly are not sharpening it with foil.
