Nooo, it would only work if topology is symmetric in the first place. If not then this will make a mess. Using mirror modifier is recommended, since it's non destructive workflow.

It always adds a weird seam right in the middle, sometimes with effed up normals even. I don't even understand why it gets asymmetric in the first place, whenever I start to sculpt, mirror is always active, and even worse, I don't even notice until I zoom way in and see the vertices are not aligned with the Z axis.
