It releases the gear to allow neutral to be selected if, for whatever reason, you can't select neutral because your engine won't turn on.

If your jeep won’t start you can’t put it into neutral ( you cant push it to the side of the road or tow it ) this release the transmission into neutral so you can push it or tow it off the road,

OK, if you can’t move your Jeep open the front compartment and pull the orange string. You don’t need to destroy the shifter. Just pull the orange string and the truck will move or jeep will move. 0:44 say you have to get towed out and it will not start and you cannot shift it in the gear pull the orange tag till it locks and when it locks move the vehicle.

It's called a detent release it's used when something else in the safety switch doesn't work allows you to shift the gear leaver out of park. When you try and start the car most require you to apply the break for safety before shifting into reverse or drive . If something is wrong in system that little button allows you to bypass the safety.

Thats a gear shift lock. All cars have it, they just have different ways of activating it.

It's not just a Jeep thing. Most automatic cars with that style of shifter have that feature. It allows for the car to be shifted into neutral without the key.
