New study from the UK (200,000 people):
Women who ate 4+ servings of fruit daily had less lung damage from smog than those who ate little fruit.
How does it work?
Smog → oxidative stress → lung damage
Fruit → antioxidants → protection against damage
SPECIFICALLY:
At the same level of pollution:
Women with low fruit consumption: -78ml lung capacity
Women with high fruit consumption: -57ml lung capacity
Difference: 27% less damage
IMPORTANT:
This does NOT mean you can live on a busy street and "settling" the issue with apples.
It means that if you're breathing this crap anyway, at least eat fruit.
WHY ONLY IN WOMEN?
CONCLUSION: Eat fruit. Not because they're "healthy" (we know that), but because they can protect your lungs from what you breathe every day.
P.S. The best sources of antioxidants: blueberries, pomegranates, grapes, citrus fruits, apples.
How much fruit do you eat a day? Tell us in the comments 👇
