šŸ’Æ This is part of the reason for the nursing "shortage". Even the most positive, energetic nurse will become drained and burn out

People are getting bigger and bigger too! Often times you will need two nurses to do peri care and to change bed sheets because the patient is too big and sick to even turn over.

I was an ICU RN and would help out other departments that were short staffed. It has gotten significantly more difficult to keep up with the demands that are required with the job. I am now a Nurse Manager and I have 10x more work šŸ˜‚ but I love i

I did PCU in the 80s. Always had 6. Four were totals from ICU.
We didn’t have a fraction of the metric BS though then. AND, half the meds!!!

Patients are so much sicker and some just don’t even try to be the ā€œgoodā€ patients…they become totally helpless once admitted. Let’s not forget the push to get these patients OUT of the hospital and trying to do more with less!!! I’m an Inpatient case manager for the ED and ED OBS and it’s stressful as well. We are expected to solve everyone’s socio-economic issues. Gone are the days if just discharge planning with HH or SNF or Hospice or DME. Now it’s they are homeless and they need oxygen and HH but they don’t qualify because they don’t have an address and no agency will accept and they don’t meet criteria for SNF! I mean I’m not a magician and I can’t make miracles happen! It’s an exhausting field for real and will likely get worse if people and the powers that be don’t get this under control!!! And people need to really focus on their health and stop relying on pills and shots while NOT making life style changes!!!

Yea it’s hard, sis this winter I did med surg because they paid me almost 100$ short term contract. I can’t do it long term. I am going back to mother baby indefinitelyšŸ˜‚

I have been a mother baby nurse for the last two years left rehab bruising. I can’t do med surg it’s too rough, mentally and especially physically. One night my lower back was burning šŸ”„ from all the lifting and turning but I still had the whole night to go. I was so sad and didn’t know what to do. Because I couldn’t tell anyone my body hurts I can’t do this. I couldn’t tell tech NO. I have to care my patients. They can’t help it as well. I had to keep working while in pain. And breathing šŸ˜®ā€šŸ’Ø and making sure I gave my back some time to stop burning. I had to fight through it. I had many total care that ni

This is not new. I've been on an incredibly heavy and busy tele stroke unit for over 30 years we routinely get 5-7 patients at night, you've gotten "spoiled" in ICU by having only 1-2 patients (yes, I know they are critically I'll but tele units have become ICU holding pens waiting for ICU beds so try having 1 ICU level patient with 3 to 4 other's which are all total care with expected full neuro assessments every 1-2 hours on the dot, and they are spread out over a large unit). Nursing is truly difficult, it is exhausting physically, mentally and emotionally. Conditions continue to deteriorate. I'm so glad I am about to retire, so sorry for those just starting out.
