🥜Peanut gallery opinions can be downright annoying and unwarranted. Oftentimes, people come from a good place with their input, but it’s really only ever helpful if we are asking for the help and, oftentimes, we are not.

Here are some ways to respond when others want to tell you how to raise your child, from gentle to firm:
👉 Thanks for sharing your opinion!
👉 Perhaps you can make a list of all the things that you feel like could be improved upon and then we will review those things on our own (feel free to toss the list)
👉 I understand that maybe that method makes a lot of sense to you, but we’ve decided to go with a different method.
👉 It sounds like you have a pretty strong opinion on this; I do too and I’m going to handle it my way because I’m the parent.
👉 What we decide to do with our child is our perrogative and although I understand you have his/her best intentions at heart, so do we and we are ultimately in charge.
👉 I’d appreciate it if you wouldn’t undermine our decisions as parents, especially in front of our child.
👉 If you continue to undermine our choices as parents, we will not allow you to spend time around our child.

👫You may find that depending on someone’s personality type, they may be fine with a gentle approach and will get the message, or you may need to be firm if they are more stubborn and thick-skinned. You have enough to worry about as parents and don’t need unsupportive opinions!
