This pilot forgot to takeoff. He had enough airspeed and everything was working fine but he looked down at the same time as the plane went down a 20 foot slope and when he looked back up the trees appeared to be 20 feet taller so he thought something was wrong and aborted his takeoff, but it was too late.

10 degrees flaps on soft field

Flaps. A few decades ago, in Canberra, Australia, the school at which I was training employed an ex-Royal Australian Navy pilot. He berated me once, because I had the temerity to use the published check list, stating, ‘You should know this stuff of by heart by now’. After that, I left that school due to this cavalier attitude. Six months later he killed himself and a passenger, after skipping over essential checklist items.

2 notches of flaps baby. Plus, the T tail Cherokee derivatives suffer from longer takeoff distances because the elevated stabilator is not in the prop wash.

Sad to see this. A proper takeoff checklist would have reminded the pilot to set the flaps properly for this particular takeoff.

I ran a Cherokee 180 in and out of various grass strips back in the 1990s. At close to gross weight and without 2 notches of flaps the plane will barely leave the ground.

Forget flaps just once and trust me, you’ll never forget them ever again.

Zero flaps on grass field? Not a smart move...

Hope he was ok!

Should have done a soft field takeoff. I didnt see a full up elevator deflection. Stay in ground effect til airspeed picks up. Climb out at Vx to avoid terrain.

LMAO! Like someone told me years ago: "Flying a plane is like riding a bicycle...you never forget how, but you might crash."

The arrow definitely requires flaps for takeoff.

Briefing a rejected takeoff is probably an item that many many pilots struggle with.

It’s been 30 plus years since I did a soft field takeoff, but shouldn’t there be some flaps and full back stick until in ground effect, then acceleration in ground effect?

Oh, he had more than enough airspeed to clear those trees, but not without the flaps. Another “casual flyer” so much smarter than the rest of us. No need for a checklist. It’s probably best the plane was damaged. Big bucks to get airworthy again, he should stick with his F150 on the ground .He was just gonna end up on an NTSB list anyway.

This reminds me of when an A-10 pilot couldn't get the plane up to speed. Instead of taxing back, he looked down, trying to figure the problem out. But in doing so, he failed to realize that he ran out of runway. He went into a farmers field, snapped the great off, and sent hundreds of rounds of ammo, all over the place.
