Flaps. A few decades ago, in Canberra, Australia, the school at which I was training employed an ex-Royal Australian Navy pilot. He berated me once, because I had the temerity to use the published check list, stating, âYou should know this stuff of by heart by nowâ. After that, I left that school due to this cavalier attitude. Six months later he killed himself and a passenger, after skipping over essential checklist items.

2 notches of flaps baby. Plus, the T tail Cherokee derivatives suffer from longer takeoff distances because the elevated stabilator is not in the prop wash.
Sad to see this. A proper takeoff checklist would have reminded the pilot to set the flaps properly for this particular takeoff.
I ran a Cherokee 180 in and out of various grass strips back in the 1990s. At close to gross weight and without 2 notches of flaps the plane will barely leave the ground.
Forget flaps just once and trust me, youâll never forget them ever again.

Oh, he had more than enough airspeed to clear those trees, but not without the flaps. Another âcasual flyerâ so much smarter than the rest of us. No need for a checklist. Itâs probably best the plane was damaged. Big bucks to get airworthy again, he should stick with his F150 on the ground .He was just gonna end up on an NTSB list anyway.

This reminds me of when an A-10 pilot couldn't get the plane up to speed. Instead of taxing back, he looked down, trying to figure the problem out. But in doing so, he failed to realize that he ran out of runway. He went into a farmers field, snapped the great off, and sent hundreds of rounds of ammo, all over the place.

He had enough airspeed and everything was working fine but when he looked down it was at the exact moment that the plane went down a 20 foot slope and when he looked back up the trees appeared to be 20 feet taller so he thought something was wrong and aborted his takeoff, but it was too late.
