#shorts Why did Czechoslovakia break up? Czechoslovakia was a country that had it capital in Prague. On January 1, 1993, Czechoslovakia split into two independent states, the Czech Republic and Slovakia, in what was known as the “Velvet divorce”. Both countries divided their common goods such as embassies, military equipment on a two-to-one ratio to reflect their populations. The dissolution was peaceful and didn’t lead to any unrest or bloodshed.

Czech Republic and Slovakia are great example how two countries who were unified can separate peacefully, still work together with respecting each other, and more importantly make progress in every aspect. They can serve us as a model of what this world needs.

So, I think I should tell you why Czechoslovakia "divorced" Czechoslovakia was a federation (yeah yeah I was shocked too). Czech republic was more developed than Slovakia and people are transfer to Czechia. Then in to Czech and Slovak parliament was elected soft nationalists. In 90's was hold a referendum , and people decided to keep Czech and Slovak together, but elite still wanted to gain independence and 1 January 1993 Czechoslovakia collapsed. Czech parlament didn't they wanted to carry ballast in the form of Slovakia, which in fact did not give anything, and the Slovak parliament did not want to remain in the shadow of the Czech Republic. So it happened that people did not even want the collapse of the country, but the elite decided everything for them(does it remind you of anything?).sorry for my English, my knowledge is not so much to write such essays.

To everyone wondering : we broke up because Slovakia felt underappreciated, they felt like it was Czech first, Slovaks second and Czechs felt like they were putting money in Slovakia (since they have a bit higher gdp). To be honest the argument that Slovaks felt left behind is not that far off, since all the administration was in Prague. To this day i dont think that any Czech person thinks of Slovakia as a foreign country and i believe that Slovakia would be the only country that Czech rep. would immediately protect from danger.

Czechoslovakia as a country got some American kind of democracy after the Velvet revolution in 1989. Nobody asked us if we wanted this, no referendum was held, because the grey eminences behind the scene knew, that almost 2/3 of people want keep Czechoslovakia together. Cheers from Slovakia.

I’m of Slovak descent. My folks did not want the division. Had Czecho-Slovakia been spelled w/ the hyphen like in its 1st declaration. Slovaks just wanted it’s recognition on the world stage. Czechs and Slovaks belong together, since the Great Moravian Empire, despite other foreign occupiers.

Czecks and Slovaks are the most civilized countries in Eastern Europe. More recently, there came a project in prague, to rebuild the old town as is was before 1939 when the nazis completley destroyed it, the architect not only looked at old paintings and pictures, but also asked the old locals how it was before until he had a scheme exactly like the one a hundred years ago. And now you can go to prague and the whole city town looks exactly like it was before the war the buludings aren't run down because they've just been built. Crazy.
