3月8日は、702年（大宝2年）のこの日、 文武天皇の命で全国的に初めて統一された「計量単位（度量衡）」が定められた日です。
「尺」や「寸」といった長さの単位は、現在では、あまり使われていませんが、これらの言葉は今も生き続けています。
「尺」は手を広げたときの親指の先から人さし指の先までの長さのことで、中国は殷の時代に定められたと言われています。
「寸」は指一本の幅のことで、両方の手の指を並べると、その幅はだいたい尺と同じ長さになります。したがって尺の10分の一が寸になります。
