I'd just like to interject for a moment. What you're referring to as Linux, is in fact, GNU/Linux, or as I've recently taken to calling it, GNU plus Linux. Linux is not an operating system unto itself, but rather another free component of a fully functioning GNU system made useful by the GNU corelibs, shell utilities and vital system components comprising a full OS as defined by POSIX.

I need you to prove to me that we are supposed to pronounce the G in GNOME. I've been doing Linux for 32 years, and I have the impression that the G is still silent.

Despite sites saying that "sudo" means "superuser do", it doesn't. sudo allows you to execute commands as another user. It allows you to switch to another user and run commands. It behaves similar to the older "su" command, that allows one to switch to another user. Both default to use root (aka superuser), but the su part is switch user or substitute user.

Non-native English speaker here and I've been pronouncing them all this way since the beginning without knowing which is correct. Looks like the reading rules of english language screw people over with these.

I originally thought MATE was pronounced [meit] like "bro"

Sudo does not mean superuser do, it means substitute user do. The root user is just the default but you can do-as any other user with sudo
