Working for a grocery store was horrifyingly eye-opening. We threw away so much food every day from our bakery and deli, food that was still good, just not made the same day, and they wouldn't let us give it to the homeless or the nearby shelters because "people will stop buying our products if we just give them away for free".

Don't forget you can throw out and destroy perfectly good food and then prevent access to the trash in order to create an artificial scarcity to maintain high prices. That's part of it.

There's also a persistent food insecurity problem. It's a massive overproduction problem too

And yet there is also still food scarcity among impoverished populations in this country. While the food exists, not everyone has access to it. This issue is so complex and has many layers to it. Happy to see the dialogue being put out there. :)

I watched the full video, despite normally not having the attention span to watch videos more than 30 to 45 minutes long. It held my attention for the entire video because it was so interesting and informative. I highly recommend watching it.

In a country where there is too much food, it baffles me that families still go hungry

As a personal trainer who was obese once upon a time....this lady is spot on ! That combined with most people have no idea how to estimate calories...some people eat very healthy and cant lose weight but dont realise they consume 1000 calories of superfluous additions every day.

This is the incredible Marion Nestle! (No relation to the Nestle company.) She is one of the greatest food scholars/researchers/advocates of our time. She leads the program at NYU and is a professor there, and is a molecular biologist and nutritionist.

I can confirm thisā¦ just my normal calorie burn not eating and doing very little activity can easily be covered by my body fat aloneā¦ and makes dieting to lose fat very hard.
But Iām making progress by limiting my fat intake and focusing on protein rich food and cutting out carbs completely.
So far almost ten pounds down and 30-40 more to go.

She looks like a sweet grandma who wants the best for you. Such a soft spoken lady. Also funny how some parts of the world face Food scarcity while the US has the opposite problem.
