To my understanding, the Sami (and therefore the Old Norse) used buckets as drums. Christians actually tried to ban the Sami from having buckets because they'd use them for rituals. Now maybe the drums were a "safe" option once Christians came in so they didn't use regular drums anymore, but we do have Viking Age burials with buckets.
