🎗️ Can Breast Cancer Recurrence Be Prevented?

Usually, after the treatment of breast cancer — or any type of cancer — is completed, we put the patient on regular follow-up visits.

👉 In the context of breast cancer:

For the first 2 years, patients are advised to come for a follow-up every 3 months. During this visit, we clinically examine you and evaluate your symptoms.

For the next 3 years, follow-ups are scheduled every 6 months.

After 5 years, we usually advise an annual check-up.

In addition:

An annual mammogram is done.

If the patient had breast conservation surgery, a mammogram of that breast is done.

If the patient had a mastectomy, a mammogram of the opposite breast is recommended.

💊 If the breast cancer is of the hormone-positive type (ER-positive or PR-positive), we usually prescribe hormonal therapy, such as:

Tamoxifen

Letrozole

These steps are crucial to detect any signs of recurrence early and to reduce the risk of recurrence.
