Shields became an important part Celtic warriors' military equipment. They were mostly oval-shaped and made out of wood.

Their centers consisted of barrel-shaped bosses of either wood or metal, with fan-like flanges. This center, shield boss, was meant to strengthen the shield and protect the arm. At first, these were made in two parts, but it was soon replaced with a single-piece boss. The shape also changed through time, from trapezoid and rectangular-shaped, to circular and butterfly-shaped.

The outer rim of the shield could also be protected with metal edge binding. A shield’s dimensions varied throughout to best fit a warrior’s skills, needs and preference.

In the British Isles, elongated shields made of bronze and carrying large ornaments. These had little practical use, and were probably meant more for showing-off, posturing, increasing your own morale, while depleting your opponent’s. instead of absorbing weapon impacts and other damage.
