This is something I’ve been thinking about for a while, and it’s something that I think is good about a Liberal Arts education. Art is informed by Life.
I think the most interesting artists I’ve seen are the ones that are interested in so much more than art itself. For instance, Hayao Miyazaki has made great work, but it’s evident in his work that he’s interested in topics like politics, environmentalism, and humanity’s relation to nature, and humanity in general. He’s not nerding out on the art itself so much as the visual arts are a medium to express his greater interests. I think there’s a place for nerding out on things like color theory, certain artistic movements, paint facture, etc. But we want our work to be about more than the work itself, to reach out to other people and hopefully engage and excite their minds. At least that’s the hope. I hope I can be a great director/artist one day that can make great works inspired by life.
I’d like to open up my own independent studio one day.
