MY TIPS
If the cards seem superficial or you always just see in them what you want to hear...
... you might struggle with confirmation bias.
Confirmation bias is when you have an assumption on what the answer to your question might be and you mold the cards’ meanings to confirm that assumption.
(This can also be a protective mechanism of your own mind to avoid difficult answers. The 6 of Cups I drew in the video fits quite well, because it can point towards seeing the world through rose-colored glasses!)
Here are some tips how you can prevent confirmation bias next time you read for yourself:
🧚 Get clear on what your bias/assumption is: Recognize what you might want or expect to hear from the cards. Note that bias DOESN’T always have to be positive. You can be biased towards what the root of a problem you have might be, just because you’re not ready to acknowledge the actual root.
🧚 Act like you are reading for someone else: How would you read these exact same cards if they were not for you? This mental trick can help you detach a bit more and be honest with yourself.
🧚 Ask a clear question: The muddier your question, the muddier the answer — and the more your bias may come into play. Make sure your question ist precise and specific.
🧚 Don’t settle on one interpretation: With practice, you do usually read the cards right the first time — but if it’s a particularly complex topic, take the time to read more about the card’s meanings and get inspired to explore more facets than just the ones that come to you easily.
🧚 Ask a friend: As easy as it sounds — ask another person how they would interpret your cards!
🧚 Write down your readings and results: You can look back and maybe find patterns of bias then.
🧚 What if an answer pops in your mind before you pull cards? Acknowledge it — but try to keep focusing on the question and draw the cards anyway. And then try to read them, as if that answer hadn’t been on your mind.
