I read 'The Alchemist' in the 90s in its original language, Portuguese. Personally, I found it to be one of the least enjoyable books I've read. It's understandable why Paulo Coelho is not often considered a writer of significant merit by Portuguese literature teachers. His writing style seems akin to literary fast food, lacking depth and substance.
