Read why? ⬇️

I followed #CurlyGirlMethod from 2016 to 2020. It was during lockdown when I realised using my parent’s hair products weren’t that bad either. Then I came across @sciencemeetscosmetics page on Instagram and I was BLOWN AND EMBARRASSED - I was not just doing but also preaching illogical things!! 😭

WHAT IS CG METHOD: CG method was given by a hairstylist (not a scientist) and asks you to avoid using shampoo, anything that does not dissolve in water like oils, silicones. The method also mentions using sulphates, silicones, mineral oils will cause buildup and damage our hair.
The first book came in 2001 and we are still following it, sadly.

WHY I LEFT IT: it has nothing to do with logic or science.

TRUTH OF CG METHOD…
• No shampoo: Only cowashing can really mess up scalp especially in India - dust, pollution, sweat, heat. Even natural sebum needs removal - excess causes dandruff flare ups and several other scalp issues
• Oils: Individual ingredient is not same as ingredient in a formulation. It behaves differently. Example: cleansing oils are water soluble. Mineral oils are light and non-sensitising.
• Sulphates - well researched and mass produced surfactants (hence cheaper). Used in very small %age in shampoo formulation. Having sulphates does not make a cleanser strong and stripping (e.g. cetaphil gentle face cleanser) and sulphate-free shampoo does not mean mild shampoo. Equally depends on what other ingredients are used. Irrespective of surfactants, a shampoo can be super mild or super strong.
• Silicones: So many types of silicones exist is cosmetics industry simply because they are awesome- slip, conditioning they have everything. Most of them easily remove with shampoo. My long hair is an example 😇
• Buildup: I get buildup with shampoo bars, too many stylers at once, too much cream, not washing hair, using very mild shampoo, too much oiling.

CG METHOD WAS HELPFUL: got to know using STYLERS is a game changer😯 introduced me to whole community of frizzy haired people helping each other get beautiful wavy and curly heads 🥹

Now am I just a happy long-haired curly girl focusing on scalp and hair health ♥️ no more misinformation spreading🫡 thank you @sciencemeetscosmeti

I've seen almost every curly-haired influencer suggest ditching your regular shampoo for a sulfate-free, paraben-free, blah-blah-blah 'mild' shampoo. So, I tried one, and let me tell you, it was the toughest time in my curly hair journey! It was so light that it couldn't clean my scalp even a bit. Within 2 weeks, I developed a lot of dandruff, and I was itching my head like crazy to the point where it started bleeding. I stopped using it and went back to my regular shampoo. These products might work for some, but definitely not for everyone.

I think a lot depends on weather , water also , so there is no rule fits all situation infact same person can have different results therefore its better to trial and error rather than sticking to something just because everyone is following it

Hi @desicurly, I started my cg journey again after watching your videos... So you say that we are good to use silicone based products like serum, leave in cream and etc.... instead of searching for products without silicone .... Does those silicons get washed off when we shampoo our hair?
