When I was 19 I did anodizing for a company that did pencil tops.
When the aluminum came out of that first dip we had to hold our breath till we hit the third rinse tank.
That shit was nasty. I only lasted two months. Once I found out we had to get tested for chromium and also found out our tank tops would have holes in them after they got washed because of the crap dripping from the ceiling.
I was out of that place.
I went home with chemical burns on my legs a few times also.
What a hell hole of a place.

It strips the aluminum because the caustic solution gives water a chance to react with the aluminum. Normally theres a thin oxide layer so water doesnt react with aluminum under normal conditions. But the caustic solution scrubs the oxide layer off as soon as it forms, preventing it from forming, and the oxygen is drawn away from the hydrogen in the water molecule, forming aluminum oxide, and releasing hydrogen. A couple companies are using this to harvest hydrogen and electricity from the heat from the expthermic reaction.

Hello from Oklahoma! We do this where I work. The man is correct on the process. It makes a part look like new. But, OSHA has strict rules about air ventilation. The fumes are toxic. I don't hear or see any ventilation. Scary.

I worked at an aircraft maintenance shop, and they had a tank with some kind of cleaner. It worked well on aluminum, but you had to be careful with magnesium. One of our mechanics forgot that a certain aircraft engine used magnesium on the accessory case. He left it in the solution overnight, and when he went to remove it from the solution, it wasn't there anymore. It had dissolved.

Holy cow Batman. I work at a nickel chrome plating facility. Those chemicals that are dripping all over are very very toxic. No respirator? Dripping acid all over? They need to improve their safety culture.

I used to do chrome, nickel, cadmium, and a couple other types of plating for a job. Itโ€™s a wild process honestly. Miss the place some days then I remember how bad lifting a giant heavy ass bumper into a tank like that on some hangers sucks. Then trying to roll it so it plates evenly without dropping it. ๐Ÿ˜ฎ

All people doing restoration, should have the clean items 3D scanned, so in the future, replacement items, can be 3D printed.

Pickling solutions we used for 24kt gold electro-plating for high-performance audio/video connectors. Some metals we would copper plate first, then polish the copper with a jeweler's rouge cloth to get a shiny surface to gold-plate onto. Otherwise you'll get a dull gold finish. The gold and copper electro-plate solution was heated to 150ยฐF and was pretty dangerous, as it contains cyanide. Deadly poison that can be inhaled if temperature gets to hot. If you smell "burnt almonds" you need to get fresh air and check your temperature! That is what people say you'll smell that have survived minor cyanide poisoning. Also it's like a brick wall fell on your head, as it removes the bond of oxygen in your blood and it gets to your brain. Then shuts you down! Amyl nitrate is an antidote if someone is around to administer it quick enough. It's comes in a glass tube you break open and have the victim inhale/breath the amyl nitrate. Like smelling salts for unconscious victims.

I worked at a huge chrome plating facility here in Canada for many years. Very very hazardous. They do all Harley Davidson parts and GM, Ford, dodge. Always wear a respirator.

Hydrofluoric acid I'm guessing. I know that stuff bubbles up aluminum rims when you spray it on them while cleaning them at a carwash.
