There's just something special about having something you love in its place of origin

The Chinese version has more of a rich eggy taste due to the regional cooking philosophy of keeping the original taste of the ingredient. In European cooking, it's generally undesirable to have custard with an egg taste.

We have both Portuguese, Chinese and Italian bakeries that have these pastries here in Edmonton Alberta. The Chinese ones also make egg tart ones which are more tender and not toasted on top.

If you’re still in Lisbon, try the ones from the original bakery that created them, Pastéis de Belem (next to the Monastery of Geronimo). There’s just some subtle differences about them that make these ones in particular absolutely special. You’ll stand in line for a bit, so grab a few (or a dozen). Enjoy Lisbon.

Today I learned. It really is so integral with HK culture I find myself just associating them with it.

Random fun fact: Manteigaria opened a store in Macau and it's right next to Margaret's

Please do a whole run on Portuguese pastries. Pastel de nata is delicious but it's clearly the one that got away, there's a whole universe in pt and you being a Chinese culture lover will have your mind blown with our bean paste tarts (pastel de feijão) ❤

I've only had the Portuguese ones in Toronto, but here they are crazy sweet - between that and the difference in texture I gotta say I like the mainland Chinese version more (which is unusual when it comes to desserts! lol).

I have had these all over the world. Nothing can top the ones in HK, even the cheapest ones you can find there. Sometimes the interpretation of the country that was colonized is SSOOOOO much better than the original!! (Coming from an avid international foodie traveler!)😅

Where in the world are you really? In the past week, I have seen you with Derk in Germany, with your parents in Hohhot, and now you are in Portugal. You must have some sort of magic.
