Would you be comfortable with your brother, husband, or son shopping for pants in the ladies section—wearing culottes, capris, and women’s jeans? No? Maybe that’s because women’s pants are women’s attire.

There’s a lot of debate over the best interpretation of Deuteronomy 22:5 (“The woman shall not wear that which pertaineth unto a man…”) and whether or not it applies to Christians. At the end of the day, even if we all agreed this is a command for Christians, even if it was part of the Sermon on the Mount rather than Old Testament law, it doesn’t forbid women’s pants.

Women’s pants are women’s attire. The idea that all pants are men’s attire (no matter how femininely they’re designed and despite being tailored for women), is mere conjecture based off secular cultural norms—largely confined to America—from 200 years ago. Furthermore, it’s inconsistent considering how many clothing items were exclusively men’s attire before a women’s version of them was created (T-shirts, hoodies, high-heels, tennis shoes, etc.).

“But what if someone made a man’s version of a dress?!” What about it? History is no stranger to men’s “dresses.” Jesus wore one such garment.

While actual cross-dressing is not in line with Christian values and we should embrace the sex God designed us to be, it’s high-time Christians stop dividing over the odd notion that women’s pants are men’s apparel.

If you prefer to wear skirts and dresses exclusively—there’s nothing wrong with that! You have a right to do so, and no one should disrespect your choice or pressure you to do otherwise.

But, if you are disfellowshipping every godly lady who wears women’s pants—accusing her of cross-dressing—please stop and reconsider in light of the evidence.
