We have decades of research in neuroscience to show that how se used to think about behavior was wrong. Now we know that most people, including kids who have challenging behaviors don’t lack willingness to behave better. Instead, they either have difficulty with skills needed for problem solving, for flexibility, and for tolerating frustration, or they’re in a mental state where they cannot utilize these skills in the moment they need it. These skills, just like any other can be learned and improved, and with that, behavior improves as well.

People do well if they CAN, instead of “if they want to.” This seemingly simple lens change helps us see through behavior and cultivate compassion for each other.
