True to their name, Stinging Nettles offer a fairly painful sting when touched. This is due to the tiny hairs, or trichomes, that inject a cocktail of inflammatory compounds into the skin. The sensation typically only lasts a few hours, but can cause some serious discomfort!

Nettles are one of my absolute favorite spring herbs for a host of reasons. It’s a food-medicine, meaning it’s generally safe for consumption, even for children. They’re mineral rich, making them great blood and bone builders. The leaves can be used to treat kidney stones, gout, and urinary tract infections.

The stinging properties can be deactivated by drying or cooking the materials. Simply lay out the leaves to dry, or steam/saute/blanche them. They make a great pesto, soup, or quiche ingredient. We also love to harvest and store some for tea year-round.
