The Nikon 35mm is far more expensive than the 40mm so including it as the kit lens would raise the price of the kit 🤷♂️

I actually really like the 40mm focal length and I think other brands are actually going that direction for smaller everyday prime shooters. For example, the very successful Fuji xf 27mm pancake (40mm ff equivalent) or also popular Sony 40mm f/2.5 G.

The more I shoot with different focal lengths, the less I like 35mm. To me, it feels like it’s a no man’s land. I definitely prefer 28mm.
My only wish is that Nikon would’ve went with a 28mm F2 compact prime
