Five years ago, I threw a surprise birthday brunch for my mother in my parents back yard. While it was fun, it was a lot of planning and a lot of planning. My dad paid for most of it, but I did all of the work.

I started planning around August. When I used to live in New York City, I used to eat at a restaurant called Jezebel's in the theater district. I remember the first time I ever step foot in there it took my breath away. There were scarfs thrown about, chandeliers all over the ceiling, porch swings were used as seating at some tables, it eclectic to say the least but extremely chic. When I started planning my mother's brunch, I immediately thought of Jezebel's.

I knew I wanted to host it in my parents back yard. They live in Florida and October should have mild temperature during the day that would withstand a few hours for brunch. I started by purchasing the dishes and stemware. I found a local company where my parents live to rent tables and chairs to accommodate all the guests. I happened to be dating a chef at the time and he help plan the menu.

When the day finally arrived, everything went off without a hitch. My mother was thoroughly surprised. My mother, her sisters and her girlfriends still talk about that brunch today. Tomorrow is my mother's birthday and I thought I'd celebrate by posting this video.
