I have seen a few axe channels on Instagram use osage orange for hatchets or camp axes. They also scrutinize the wood for grain quality and cracks. I've been told as long as it's a shorter handle, it should last as long as other hickory handles. What climate zone or area of the country are you? Because that may play a factor the quality of your particular osage orange timber.
