How To Work On LIVE Electrical Circuits - Master Electrician (DO NOT ATTEMPT)

This is a short clip from a longer video where Stephan demonstrates how to install a data logger on a LIVE 600 AMP, 480 Volt electrical panel called a switchgear. He shows the proper way to wear an arc flash suit, how to open a live electrical panel, how to work with live electrical wires, how to handle an electrical breaker, and how to figure out how much electrical amperage is produced in a short circuit fault situation.

This is a demonstration video ONLY showing how to safely follow NFPA 70E and OSHA safety standards when working with live electricity. This is NOT a tutorial for DIY installers or untrained electricians. Only competent trained electrical professionals should perform this type of electrical work. AGAIN I STATE THIS IS NOT A TUTORIAL FOR UNTRAINED INDIVIDUALS. DO NOT ATTEMPT!

The point of this video is to show how to safely install a data logger on a live electrical switchgear when the facilitiy cannot be shut down. Make sure to wear all proper PPE, and follow NFPA 70E and OSHA regs. I thought it would be a good demonstration to remind everyone how important following procedure is considering so many electricians don’t use PPE or are urged by their employers to do hot work without the proper PPE.

Glad I work for a company that doesn’t allow live work and will just take the hit financially to de energize it.

NFPA 70E my man. 3 rules constitute a hot work permit to do live work. Testing, life support, or continuous process. And who ever signed off on that hot work permit is the representative that should be in the hot suit. Stay safe!

Nothing like risking your life so the company owner can buy a bigger boat or a new Rolex next year.

The rest of the story is that suit will keep you away from getting 3rd+ degree burns, so you’re still gonna get charred a bit, and does ZERO for the pressure wave in the event of arc blast.

The company that makes that equipment would know and has all the appropriate skills and certification to do that job correctly without you risking your life that is priceless...and they wouldn't do that job live

I know because I did that job

I didn't see any arc flash labels. How did he know what the arc fault current level is?

Was installing a cover on a 480v 3ph circuit and the panel fell on to 2 of the phases. The breaker did take out the circuit quickly but the flash caused all my finger nails on my left had to be coated with copper. Later after my incident, workers at a local utility were installing a panel on a 12.5kv switchgear when it fell in and caused a massive arc flash that kill all 4 of the workers. I was told that everything was coated in this copper film. That is how hot those arc flashes are to instantly melt copper. After that, I always de-energize the circuit or wear proper PPE.

Dosent osha require the employer to give proper ppe and not out of pocket?

Why dont you just connect the datalogger to the ct connections on the meter so you only have to open the panel door? 🤔

He’s indicating he is going to open the pull section to make connections, which should only contain insulated wires. But the correctly selected PPE should be worn regardless. And somehow he needs to clip on to the reference voltage where it IS exposed. Like others have said, turn it off. You can either have a planned outage of known duration, or an unplanned outage of unknown duration if you blow it up. What represents the greater risk to you and your customer?

A lightning hit blew open the door and we were blinded by the arc flash. A lot of the box had severe burning. All new components to replace the old. Class F insulating paint inside the box. I give the box plenty of room in the switch gear room.
