I definitely think it's a self fulfilling prophecy. Say that something will happen enough and it will ya know?
That being said when I went to school in Mayo I always heard it was the mother of the dead man who put the curse on them for now showing due respect by bring silent while passing through.
Also, at school we used to joke that the county council will have to start hiring hitmen to finally get the job done!

Update: Mayo lost the 2021 final against Tyrone. This was their 11th time losing a final since "the curse" in 1951, 70 years ago.
