Not always. I owned a Neo•Geo Gold System (AES) at launch, in December 1990, and I sure wasn't rich! I was a 17 year old, who started a snow removal/lawn care business with my brother, and also worked at the warehouse of retailer Service Merchandise. In had already bought myself the Sega Genesis and TG16 in August 1989, along with many NES games. My parents were not into video games at all, and after they bought my brother and I a NES, I was on my own when it came to buying new game systems. So, I first saw the Neo AES show up in the April 1990 issue of EGM, and knew I had to have one. :) So I started putting aside enough money for the Gold System w/Baseball Stars Pro ($550), and a few AES games ($170 each for NAM-1975, Cyber-Lip, Ninja Combat, and League Bowling). The store I ordered from also threw in a free $30 MEMORY CARD. So that was nice of them. Those were the days!

I had a neo geo cdz when i was 18, Had like 10 games for it, But got kinda bored fast, Best and cheapest way to own one is either emulation on pc or now mvs replica with 161 in one cart i guess with modified output solutions and pads support if you want the proper thing for an affordable price.

Dude! I seem to remember you saying you’re out by the Inland Empire. Thirty years ago, when the Neo Geo was at its height of popularity, I was attending CSUF and my friend who lived in Anaheim introduced me to a shop near Lincoln & State College, off the 57. They had a great display with new Neo Geo games all the time, including Japanese titles. One of his regular customers was Dustin Diamond (and his dad) who pretty much had a standing order for whatever new Neo Geo titles came out. I never would have imagined back then being able to plug a $40 Pi into a 55” flat screen to play literally any Neo Geo game — but here we are! 😆😆
