As hobby photographer, I asked a wedding photographer (gently) if she would provide the raw files for an additional expense, and she declined. I wasn't offended β it is a compelling argument (to me) that a commercial photographer does not wish to have their work misrepresented to potential customers by a client, and that their final work product, their art, is that end image.
My personal motivation was to have the flexibility to return to a seminal life event in the future and revisit and reimagine the colors and work. I often return to my own work in the past and reinvent it β e.g. turning a series of memorable vacations into Cinemascope-styled images through color and crop β and it is much more difficult to revisit and reimagine seminal life events with the limitations of a jpeg.

Okay so, people Do ask for sketches, and drafts and observe dancers grooving for fun. There are people who want to see the process not because its somehow equal to the result but purely because they have a geniune love for the entire aspect of a creative process that they dont understand or cannot recreate. But yaknow fuck the lot of us like that eh?
