Step back in time with 25-cent haircuts at this old school barbershop. When Jim Borren opened his barbershop in Woodbury, Tennessee he only charged 25 cents for a haircut and 15 cents for a shave. That was 1943. 35 years later he hadn't changed the price a penny. His barbershop was the place to just stopped by to talk, exchange news and swap stories. Once upon a time there were thousands like it in every town in the country. Now they’re all gone. If you ever wondered about that old song, "Shave and a haircut – two bits" that was Jim Borren’s barbershop. This story aired on WSB-TV Channel 2 Action News in 1978.

Long before CNN and Fox News the Traveler series with Andy Johnston was an Emmy award winning program that showcased amazing people, unusual things, local legends, food finds, outdoor activities, folk art, and family fun. In 2022 the Walter J. Brown Media Archives at the University of Georgia founded The Original Georgia Traveler -- Andy Johnston Collection to preserve and maintain the stories.

The Traveler Series celebrates life and living in America in the 1970s. These are true stories and funny stories about nostalgia, small towns, traditional life and the good old days. The stories give us ways to compare then and now. Folklore, music, handcrafts, vanishing America and unusual people.

This story is presented for educational and preservation purposes and is covered under Fair Use. At the time it was broadcast the television station had a blanket music license with ASCAP, BMI and SESAC. The station maintains that license today. All music used is covered under that agreement.

Reminds me of getting our hair cut at Mr. Frog Stewart's, here in Oglethorpe County, when we were little. Daddy or Papa would take us over there to get our ears lowered. Mr. Frog was NOT a beautician, he was a barber! A man had 2 choices when they went. Buzzcut or Flattop. Mr. Frog was no joke! Lol.
