Go to work to earn for yourself and your family, as the best of us is the best to his/her family. Part of that earning and in being the best to the family is providing for them, so yes go grocery shopping for the Mrs
Buying that house or car for the family can also be part of being the best for the family so long as a person is not being extreme (not stingy, not excessive)
The right intention is everything. Spending time and wealth in what will please Allah will become an act of worship. We're entrusted with these blessings, so use them to become a better believer
