Ive had a lot of luck with mixing washing soda, borax, and a grated laundry bar. Its been really cheap, the boxes of the powder mixes last me forever, and it keeps my stuff clean. I work at a dog daycare, have a service dog, and i am constantly around my best friend's 5 dogs, so my clothes are constantly getting covered in dirt and slobber and, because of my job, a lot of gross animal fluids. After washing, you cant even tell ive worn any of my work clothes to the kennel. If it turns out the laundry detergent is the cause of some of my skin issues and not an issue with food (still figuring it out, ive had this issue with all detergents so not likely) I plan to try the laundry powder from the refillery downtown.

Yes! I use: 1 box of washing soda, 1 box of baking soda, 1 box of borax, 1 bag epsom salt, 1 box iodized salt (or 2 cannisters), and 1 box of oxygen-based stain remover (oxyboost, oxyclean, etc), and mix it all together. I fill my laundry tub, and store the rest in an old popcorn cannister in the linen closet. Lasts our family about 4-6 months for the price of ~1.5 months' worth of standard detergent.
Something to remember: this is NOT a detergent. If your family includes a grease monkey or somebody who works with infectious diseases, this likely WILL NOT WORK. You'll want an actual detergent for those loads, or if you have small children or pets who have accidents.
However, if y'all are desk jockeys, farmers, or basically anything that doesn't work with petroleum-based products or bodily fluids, you'll be good. The agitation of the machine does 90% of the work anyway, and this powder will cover everything up to heavy-duty stains or bodily waste. We live/work outside in FL, where our heat index goes from swampa$$ to b@llsoup, and our clothes are fine. It does work pretty well on period stains, as long as it's not on white fabric. Add about 1/8c of white distilled vinegar to the softener trap for added destinkification.

DIY laundry detergent is a TERRIBLE way to āsaveā money. For one, it does not work that well. More importantly, there is NO WAY to make it HE compatible, which the overwhelming majority of washing machines are now. If you want to save money washing clothes, wash with cold water and use the appropriate 1-2 Tbsps of HE detergent you should be, and then donāt overdry your clothes in the dryer.

Iāve tried a very similar homemade laundry detergent and was so excited about it, but it didnāt get clothes clean. The clothes just feltā¦filmy. Icky. Iām back to regular unscented/non-dyed detergent for now as my family is very active and gets sweaty/dirty, and the homemade stuff wasnāt cutting it. Though I bet it would if I did a good old hand-wash scrub against a laundry board haha! No kidding, I think that would probably work with a homemade detergent, just adding in the elbow grease. But in a machine, the chemicals are needed to strip out the stains and scuzz.
