Great to be reminded that they can just put shit in there and turn it on whenever they feel like it

I’d like to imagine some apple employee was just watching the JerryRigEverything vid where he found those sensors and went like “Oh fuck I was supposed to activate those wasn’t I” and just quickly snuck that into the next update before anyone would notice

That's like finding C4 in your pager

Apple: hey we have put some c4 in your device, we won’t tell you, and in the future update we will let you experience it closely

In software development it is called feature flagging. Build a feature but don't activate it until when it is needed

It’s feature flagging in software development. Some features are shipped in parts so that they can keep the deployment small then when everything is ready, they will flip a flag for all users to start seeing that feature

Apple also has the ability to "download more ram" in the recent iPads.

Apple doing anything they can to make their “1.111111 and 1.111112” updates more appealing

Another example is our iPhones can suddenly control the narrowness and wideness of our flashlights.

But the thread radio in my 15 pro already works… all my thread accessories turn on INSTANTLY now instead of waiting like half a second for it to go through the homepod

This is common in plenty of tech. We often have things on our products we are still developing the software for our having connectors for stuff we want to put in an fco later to add function. This is in the 3d printing industry so another rapidly changing tech.

I've always known this too. They have loads of technology they haven't released yet and put them out in microscopic doses cause they know that's all it takes to wow us into paying thousands for the next new device.

They also did it with some of the Intel iMacs, with them shipping 802.11N but not activating it until the standard was finally ratified. While this didn’t cause issue in most parts of the world, at the time in the USA, adding this feature meant that Apple had to charge US customers, this was due to a quirk in the law at the time, and after the furore that erupted, the law was quietly updated to stop issues like this happening in the future.

That’s actually something I’ve always wondered; I was so confused when Apple (and plenty other companies) somehow implement what is believed to be a software update, but an entire part of hardware is activated. It confused me as a kid (by kid, I mean late elementary and early middle school), wondering how a whole new piece of technology magically enabled itself without being told that hardware was even in the machine.
