I don't think that question is a private question at all because someone who believes in God is something you want to tell the world because we are all called to witness and if you keep your belief private then you have no witness. We are never to be ashamed!!!

Plenty of folks believe in gods, but that's missing the point; God is a very different concept. The ascetics can tell you a thing or two about the latter, but they probably won't until you figure it out yourselves. There's a lot just beneath the surface of and above normalcy.
Just one thing I should say to help: if you're always seeking a definition, you'll hardly be learning a thing.

That verse about fruit refers to Jesus identifying false prophets. He wants to leave the job of conversion to actual pastors. He wants society to be religious but he doesn't believe the supernatural claims of the Bible. He doesn't want to insult religious people by saying his true opinion because most people aren't clinical psychologists obsessed with human mental health, so for most people they need to believe in the supernatural to be christian. Spirit that protects you from hell? Hell is nihilism and staring into the abyss of reality. He knows how precarious our situation is, look at how brutal our history is. Nobody holds a chimp with dna 98% identical to humans morally accountable when it tears someone apart, and deep down he doesn't hold humans accountable for all their greed and genocide either. Just my psychoanalysis.
