I swear every time someone who's never tried Marmite or Vegemite tries it, they immediately try eating it by the spoonful! (I mean as someone who absolutely loves it I can and have eaten it that way before but you're not supposed to do that!)

Vegemite was originally spent brewer's yeast that was left over after the beer batch. It's extremely nutritional. Foul as hell. However Finley scraped on top of buttered toast. Which really helps spread out that flavor remove the concentrated founlness. It is actually quite pleasant. An acquired taste, like coffee is an acquired taste. You wouldn't eat a mouth full of espresso grounds, you don't need a mouthful of Vegemite

As an Australian who doesn't really like vegimite, (actually I haven't had it in ages, I'll have to try it again sometime), you're supposed to have it spread very thin, some people like it with butter.

Australian here. We're tired of saying this. Don't eat it by the spoonful XD
It's a bread spread. Make a toast. Maybe butter it. Put some Vegemite. Maybe add a cheese slice or whatever the hell you may choose to put and enjoy.
There are a select few of us who will just take a teaspoon straight and enjoy it but the general consensus is: It's a spread.
