The "I suffered so you should too" mindset is absolutely wild. Our military defense budget is greater than the next 10 highest countries COMBINED and that's okay, but how dare we aim for higher education as a nation. My grandparents paid for university and saved up for a home on their part time wages. I would be living under a bridge if I tried to survive on minimum wage in my city. Things are not the same as they were.

Boomers could pay for an entire college year with a summer job. It cost about $236.

I worked full time during university, often overnight. It did impact my final results and made my dream career impossible. Then I had to pay off the debt for years and years afterwards. The idea of the government taking a bit more out of my pay to pay off other people’s debt is… actually, pretty A OK with me, actually. At least a tiny proportion of my taxes would be going towards actually helping people instead of paying for representatives to golf. Or, you know, tax Amazon and not like, the people to get it paid for? But that’s a radical idea.

And their tuition was, like, 75 cents, a ball of lint, and two raisins 😂

For a generation that pushed college soo damn hard, now they’re mad we can’t afford it because, WAKE UP BOOMER, INFLATION DOES NOT MATCH THE RATE OF INCOME

Nobody ever actually addresses the real complaint which is that forgiving the debt doesn’t solve the ongoing problem. Forgive the 20 year old student loan debt but also pat on the back for the 18 year old who just signed up for 4X that level of debt…? Reform the lending system/out of control tuition rates and you’ll solve the issue.

The problem is BACK THEN, when a lot of people who are 50+ went to college, paying off student loans was a lot more feasible. The cost of a college education was way cheaper when they got their degrees. Plus, the value of the dollar was a lot more then than it is now. Its not as simple as just paying it off anymore, trust me, WE ALL WISH IT WAS.

I've heard this too and I always ask them - are you going to oppose improved cancer treatment too just because the previous generation had it worse? What about cars with better safety ratings? They only oppose progress when it's convenient to them.

My favorite thing is I was talking to my dad, a Boomer, and I was upset about not being able to pay my bills. He said, "when I was a kid my dad was to only one to work in the house and he only brought $500 home, and I thought that was a lot of money!" And you shouldn't complain, was the subtext. I pulled up from 1970s and he corrected me to 1965 which made it worse for him. $500 is more than I make in a month due to inflation. I gave him the benefit of the doubt and said that it could be because they are adjusting it because now women can have bank accounts so there are more 2 worker households. He did not like that. 😂😢😭😭😭😭

Do these corpses not understand that having an educated population is better for the whole society?? More doctors, more teachers, more nurses…As a European it just makes no sense how committed Americans are to suffering for the sake of individuality, when you could just help each other and benefit from it all.

They say these things but they don't account for inflation and changes in the economy. My mom pays less on her mortgage per month than I would ever be able to rent.

Yeah because you used to be able to flip burgers and go to school and still somehow afford a cool ass car? Like wtf 😂

People often claim complicated issues have simple and obvious solutions and are usually wrong, but I feel like student debt absolutely has one. Student debt was originally mostly owned and run by the government, and had very good terms, and so the government made them non-dischargeable. Now, a huge portion of student debt is run by corporations and is priced much higher, like a normal loan. If someone gets a great job with their education, great, they don’t need debt forgiveness. If someone can’t, and/or suffers significant financial hardship, that’s literally what bankruptcy is for. If corporations are going to charge high interest rates on student debt, which is supposed to offset risks, then that debt should be treated like any other debt in bankruptcy court.

We have the opposite in Australia, boomers had free higher education while we have debt with the government.

Taxpayers used to subsidize universities at much higher levels. Those old dudes didn't have to pay nearly as high a percentage of the actual cost as today's students.

Ok. I will explain the reason old people say these things. They were taught that you get things when you sacrifice and suffer. The more you put in, the more you get. They sacrificed and the only way they can cope is by knowing it was worthwhile. If someone else gets the same thing they have but doesn't have to sacrafice, they feel their sacrafice was all for nothing. I'm Gen X and I am here to translate.

You have two choices as you get older. Get scared, resentful, bitter and cold towards the world and your finite existence, Or you can become comfortable with discomfort and work towards a better world for everyone not just yourself. The best people plant trees even if they know they’ll never sit in their shade. This is the beauty of the collective humanity. I’m happy to be a part of it, I don’t want to be apart from it.

The next question to those old boomers always has to be: What was your tuition per semester and how much did it cost you to live at school?

FOR A LOT OF THE OLD PEOPLE, THEY ACTUALLY HAD MORE COLLEGE PAID FOR OR DIDNT NEED COLLEGE
