I thought the rotor was gonna graze your helmet lol

He may have actually done that on purpose. If he landed downhill from you, the rotors would have been even closer to the ground.

ironically might have been safer right next to the helo than at where the blade meets the sloped ground

Safest place is under the rotors. People 'moving back' as the chopper approaches is likely to make the pilot nervous and annoyed, and result in a few choice words for the guide. The guide (or most experienced person) should (and probably is) behind the group, ideally making physical contact to make sure they don't move.

Holy cow that was incredibly dangerous. I guarantee the pilot didn’t mean to get that close Edit: What’s interesting about this comment string is that it shows a lot about human nature. Most of these people hating on me for saying the helicopter might have landed a bit too close probably didn’t know that this is normal either, but since one or two others did know and left a comment about it, many others read that comment and started taking it as an opportunity to leave hate, and act like they know this is normal. It’s kind of like when one sheep jumps off a cliff, all the others want to follow. And it’s all because people gain pleasure from leaving hate and feeling like part of a group (and this case, the group hating on one guy) I am willing to bet that 95% of these people leaving hate would not have said anything (or known to say anything) unless they saw others doing it already. Herd mentality man, it’s crazy to see how simple and shallow human beings are.

You grazed the skid. If you’re ever “grazed” by a helicopter, you’ll feel that one.

My MOS in the army was 15 yankee, which is the electronics, avionics and armament repairman for the apache attack helicopter. If anyone was wondering because of the poorly worded title, people do die fairly often to helicopter rotors. It typically happens on unlit flight lines at night from the tail rotor. Usually it results in instantaneous death, if they walk into it head first.

That pilot got big round spherical ones.

Helis always land that close in the winter. The rotor wash kicks up so much snow that they can't see the ground so they need visual reference ie. people to land next to

He did this on purpose so that you guys could get right into the heli. They don’t want you walking around the rotors, etc. Helicopter pilots have to be extremely precise.

"He's coming in on top of us" As opposed to a submarine giving you a ride....

It's like a shark attack but don't be totally scared, it's just checking you out and sensing what kind of a creature you are.

This is actually how it’s supposed to be

Pilot can’t see what’s beneath the snow. There’s no storm, safest place to land is right next to the people. If he lands and snow is deeper blades might hurt the people so yeah, safest landing

It think it was your helmet that touched the helicopters skids my guy, not the other way round!
