Flawless logic. Practically every weekend that I'm out as a "vest pocket dealer" I have to break some kind of bad news to very hopeful newbies. I try to educate them to the limit of my knowledge - but I'm sure many leave thinking that the scam internet sales offer they saw MUST be smarter than me!

There are pawn shops that basically survive on melt down value buys. If it's a cute enough piece, they'll try and sell the item online. It's not smart to have someone like that appraise your goods. It's comparable to having a scrap metal shop guess the value of your bronze statue family heirloom.

I’m most cases you’re correct. But there are those bad apples that ruin it for the rest. Seekers story the other day was testament to this very thing. This is why it is so important to establish a relationship with a quality coin dealer.

That's the logical conclusion I came too a long time ago. A dealer would love to be a part of a discovery or some major variety. There is not much advantage to letting something like that walk out the door.

Happens all the time. I can tell you where the coin shops are in Cincinnati who will tell you it's nothing and the coin shops who will buy the exact same coin. Most errors and varieties are not worth grading.

I noticed that some coin dealers are limited to really know how to grade ,or estimate a coin .
I have shown a penny to dealer he seems to be honest, he seen the coin and suggested to have it graded.
It appears to have been damaged in a machine gear , it has imprint across the obverse of the penny,my opinion, it's a zinc Blanchard and became damaged before it was coated . The shape of the gear was 5 square markings across the penny.
Pcgs label it counterfeit, I don't think that's correct.
I called and was told four people looked at it, so I don't think they don't know what I have .
It is in mint state condition.

I found a 2023 penny that has absolutely no VDB on it. And it looks to be maybe mint grade 66 there's no scratches that I can see. Should I send it in to be graded?
